Comment

This disorder is characterized by the development of diffuse lipomas, in particular of the shoulders, neck, head and the upper arms. The lipomas may invade deep tissues. Age of onset is middle age, with more males than females affected (4:1). Some familial cases have been reported. [1]. The disorder may occur in association with polyneuropathy[2]. Interestingly, Di Gennaro et al.[3] reported multiple symmetric lipomatosis in 2 families with mitochondrial encephalopathy and mutations in the mitochondrial DNA. Respiratory chain defects were detected in the lymphocytes of a group of multiple symmetric lipomatosis patients studied by Becker-Wegerich et al.[4]. Use of alcohol is associated with symmetric lipomatosis. A few cases of head-and-neck cancer have been repported in patients with multiple symmetric lipomatosis[7,8].
